To a great extent, the quality and success of Pocket PC magazine flows from the practical wisdom of its readers and their contributions to the publication—and not from a select group of “experts” hired to tell you what’s best. This philosophy is also reflected in the Pocket PC magazine online forums (http://www.PocketPCmag.com/forum/), a place where users of Windows Mobile devices can post comments, questions, discoveries, news, tips, rumors, and more. Ever since they opened last June, the forums have been a great source of information about the Pocket PC, so much so that we have decided to share some of this information with our print magazine readers.
Welcome to the first installment of “From the PocketPCmag.com Forums,” a regular column that will share practical knowledge from forum members. We have edited the information to provide clarity and avoid repetition. In most cases, the information will be presented in a question and answer format. We have also added screen shots where appropriate. These examples represent only a small sample of the Pocket PC wisdom posted on the forums daily.
A very big “Thanks!” goes to all the forum members and moderators for sharing their insights with other users. Rich Hall.
Can’t install newest version of Volkswagen diagnostics software
I have an iPAQ 3850 running PPC 2002. On this I have installed a freeware program called VAG-Check for Pocket PC (Fig. 1), which runs diagnostics on Volkswagens. There is a newer version available, but I cannot install it because there are two .ttf font files in the ROM that stop this from happening. I am having difficulty deleting these files. I even tried a soft reset, but it did not help.

Delete the offending Pocket PC files from your desktop PC, using ActiveSync’s File Explorer. The files should be stored in your “File Store.” Other forum members have asked where they can get the program and how they connect the Pocket PC to the car’s diagnostic system. You can download VAG-Check from the ARlab Web site (http://www.arlab.it). The site also has instructions for building the “interface board” that is needed to connect the Pocket PC to the Volkswagen. The Rob’s Audi World Web site (http://www.robsaudiworld.com/vag.htm) also has information about using this free utility.
