Free Tutorials from Microsoft, Great New Mobile Resources

Pocket PC magazine makes back issues and selected articles from the current issue available online at PocketPCmag.com. Now, we also make this material available on our mobile Web site, formatted to fit the smaller screen of your device. I thought we should take a quick look at our mobile site as well as some other great new mobile resources around the Internet. But first I'm eager to tell you about some new, free tutorials from Microsoft.

Free Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition tutorials

Microsoft has recently posted free tutorials on its Web site, all focusing on the latest Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/tutorials.mspx). Three tutorials are available: one for the Pocket PC, one for Phone Edition devices, and one for the Smartphone. Download and install any of them and you're ready to go. Running the application displays a full-screen, slide-show-like tutorial that you run through to see a demonstration of particular functions of each device.

The Pocket PC tutorial is divided into eight broad categories: Device Basics, Personalization, Connectivity, PIM (Personal Information Management), Messaging, Web Browsing, Media, and Pocket Office, each with many subcategories. The Phone Edition version has an additional Phone category. The Smartphone version has similar subcategories.

Install these on your Windows Mobile device and review them in your spare time, wherever you are. The Pocket PC and Phone Edition versions will install on any Windows Mobile 2003 or Pocket PC 2002 device (with or without a built-in phone). The Smartphone version will only install on a Windows Mobile Smartphone. These are impressive offerings, useful to anyone eager to master the basics.

Pocket PC magazine Mobile

For several years Pocket PC magazine has had a popular mobile site (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/mobile), which includes my weekly column about online resources, our Directory of Mobile Sites, our weekly Hot Downloads, and the Tip of the Week. To that we recently added our Archives of Past Issues and a link to a page in our online shopping cart, where you can subscribe to Pocket PC magazine.

One very convenient way to take advantage of the new mobile archives is to use Internet Explorer's Mobile Favorites feature or an application such as SunnySoft World Offline (http://www.sunnysoft.cz) to download this content on to your device for offline reading.

The Directory of Mobile Sites lists some of the best “mobile portals” (sites that list links to other great mobile sites). Two of the best are:

  • PDA Hotspots (http://www.wacklepedia.com/pdahotspots/pda_hotspots.htm)—My current favorite mobile portal is Chuck Ayoub's PDA Hotspots. He's done a great job of collecting and organizing Web sites formatted for the small screen. This is a very pleasingly designed and useful directory that gives you quick access to the top sites in 16 categories, from Entertainment to World News. It indexes over 1,000 sites.
  • MobileWeb (http://www.pdamobileweb.com)—Another good portal is MobileWeb, which is designed for access from cell phones and PDAs (Palm, Pocket PC, and others). The site uses subcategories, which keeps the main category pages clean and simple, but allows for an index that contains hundreds of links.
