Geocaching basics: Paperless caching

The latest installment in my series of articles on geocaching will deal with the topic of paperless caching. Most people who geocache today use handheld GPS receivers like Garmin and Magellan. Most of these units let you download multiple waypoints, but they contain just the basic information (coordinates and maybe a short description). What many people do is print out the geocache information page for the caches they wish to find. Not only is this a waste of paper, it is a hassle to print and carry all of this around with youespecially when you are out looking for many caches. The solution to this is paperless caching using your Pocket PC.

As I mentioned in my previous article, GPX files contain all the information about cachesincluding hints and logs from other finders. Since these files already contain all the information you need to go paperless, the only thing missing is software to view this on your Pocket PC. The rest of this post lists the most common applications used for paperless caching.

Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 718/720 users attention: Bad Bluetooth bug

While testing the multiplayer capabilities of the new, 1.2 version of Fast Sudoku (http://www.ppclink.com) on my Pocket LOOX 720, I discovered a problem of increased CPU cycle usage when operating in Bluetooth PAN mode. This problem is particularly visible if you have more than 3-4 Bluetooth icons on the main screen of your Bluetooth Manager (it causes a generic slowdown of the device and an increase in battery consumption). The Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 718/720 have this problem, but other Widcomm-based devices may also be affected.
