QUICK TIP: Changing the bar system color (the base hue) under WM5+

I’ve just been asked in the Smartphone & PPC Mag VIP section (where I’m the lead helper) of how you can easily change your upper / lower / scrollbar colors on WM5+ (WM5, WM6, WM6.1 etc.) Windows Mobile devices with touchscreens (NOT models without them!), also often referred to as the “base hue”.

REVIEW: Teksoft's brand new Pocket PC utility suite Smart Bar

Teksoft, developer of the excellent BlueMusic application (see for example this article & the links), has just come out with a brand new suite, Smart Bar, of system management applications. I decided to give it a try as it’s a pretty capable suite of utilities with some really excellent modules.

They even promise an application capable of recording both (!) parties in a phone conversation (so far, this has been impossible with all Pocket PC Phone Edition devices of both HTC and ASUSTeK (Fujitsu-Siemens T8x0)); I think it’ll work by directly “tapping into” the Bluetooth unit as can be seen for example in here.

REVIEW: Free, great Today launcher application Launcher by Scott Seligman

I’ve long been wanting to review Scott Seligman’s Launcher, which has always been one of the better and, what is more, free (!) Today launchers.

Availability, compatibility

(Current, tested version: 1.40)

It’s available here (direct download link here) and is compatible with all WM2003+ operating systems (it’s NOT compatible with PPC2k / 2k2 - tested this on my Compaq iPAQ 3660.)

I’ve tested it on most (HTC Wizard (WM5; KTamas/bepe AKU3.2 RC1 ROM version), Dell Axim x51v (WM5; A12), HP iPAQ hx4700 (WM5; 2.01), HP iPAQ 2210 (WM2003; 1.10) and Pocket Loox 720) of my WM2003+ devices (along with memory / CPU usage meters) and had no problems on any of them.

Usage

Install it. After the first run (enable it in Settings / Personal / Today / Items), the \Launcher directory on your PDA will be populated with all the links in your Start Menu. You can, then, freely edit these and delete the ones you don't need.

New version of great Today launcher application, iLauncher 2.3, is out! A comparative review & comparison

http://www.sbsh.net/products/ilauncher/index.php?page=summary

Ever wanted to put icons to your favourite programs/documents on your Today screen, as you'd do with your desktop Windows' desktop? Unfortunately, you do need third-party applications to do this. Luckily, there are quite a few of them; a new version of iLauncher, one of the most important ones, has just been released. It has really excellent capabilities (please see their list in here).

My icons load very-very slow when I go to Start/Programs

http://www.firstloox.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5114&page=2

Q: My icons load very-very slow when I go to Start/Programs to start my favourite apps. There're a lot of them, almost everything installed to a storage card, and it sometimes takes a minute to be able to see some of them after I've soft reset my PPC. A: This problem can indeed be pretty annoying. It is caused by the time needed for resource fetching, which can be pretty large especially in the case of (comparatively) slow memory cards and large EXE/DLL files to traverse. The problem is even made larger by the fact that Windows Mobile needs to re-fetch these icons after a soft reset (when you go to Start menu - incidentally, this is why even displaying Start menu can take so long after a reset if you've run several memory card-based programs before. The Start Menu isn't shown before all the icons are fetched from the card).
