Device Updates, T*Omnia Includes Satellite TV
I enjoy keeping tabs on the latest and greatest, and this week we’ll note a new Windows Mobile phone, the T*Omnia, which includes a satellite TV receiver. I’ll also point you to reviews of some of the most popular new devices — including the new Samsung Epix from AT&T
Satellite TV on the T*Omnia
The good news is that these gadgets just keep getting more cool features. The bad news: the new T*Omnia with satellite TV is only available in Korea. But typically these phones eventually find their way abroad, or the features find their way into other devices.
The T*Omnia, a variant of the Samsung Omnia, has a 3.3-inch WVGA display with 480x 800 resolution. You can read more on the AkihabaraNews web site. Like the original Omnia, this device has an iPhone-like touch interface.
Imagine your device in the near future: Internet, GPS, camcorder, phone, FM tuner, and TV. What will they think of next?
AT&T’s Samsung i907 Epix
Last month AT&T released the Samsung i907 Epix, a Windows Mobile Professional phone with a BlackJack II form factor. The features include 3G, 2 megapixel camera/camcorder, aGPS, Voice Command, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a 2.5-inch, 320x320 display. The cost is $199 with a two-year contract.
With all the hype surrounding the new devices with touch interfaces, a device like this sort of gets lost. But I used AT&T’s Treo 750 for a few months, and there’s a lot to like about the one-handed operation and the convenient, front-facing QWERTY keyboard.
You can read a review of the i907 Epix on WMExperts, which compares it favorably to the Treo Pro. There’s also a helpful review on MobileTechReview.
Samsung Omnia
For those no longer satisfied with the Windows Mobile stock interface and who are leaning toward the new touch interface devices, the Samsung Omnia i900 remains an appealing option.
The review on Brighthand is blunt in calling it an iPhone clone, since it copies the same basic form factor and some of the specs. And the review notes the obvious differences: a removable battery, additional buttons, memory card slot, and more. Of course, you pay a pretty price for this state-of-the-art gizmo: $700.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
We’ve been covering/hyping the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 since its announcement in February — mostly just news about its specs and anticipation of its arrival. And now we have a review on MoDaCo.
Indeed it is an interesting device. Manufactured by HTC, it’s in the family of new iPhone-like devices, with a large 3-inch WVGA (800x480) screen and HTC’s TouchFlo interface. Like the HTC Touch Pro, it includes a slideout QWERY keyboard. Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera, a separate forward-facing camera for video conferencing, GPS, and FM radio. Notably, it also includes an interface feature called Panels. You can read more about that in MoDaCo’s review.
Other Reviews of New Devices
4WinMobile.com reviews the new O2 Xda Serra (the O2 variant of the HTC Touch Pro), with specs similar to the Xperia. Pocket PC Thoughts reviews the HTC Advantage 7510, which is the “laptop-replacement” PDA that we’ve noted in the past. And reviews of the Palm Treo Pro can be found on Tracy and Matt’s Blog and MobileTechReview.
