An Easy Way to Fix Dead/Stuck Pixel Problems

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuck_pixel

Did you ever run into stuck and/or dead pixel problems (please see the above link for the definition of these problems if unsure)? Are you afraid (because it can easily result in actually fracturing the LCD screen) of the "traditional" "massage" way of fixing them? Then, you must give this video a try (the article it's linked from can be found here) a try. Extract M4V56052.MP4 from the ZIP file, transfer it to your PDA, grab TCPMP and load the file (just click OK if you're presented an error dialog about the missing AAC codec). Then, when the video starts playing, just click it to make it full-screen. Note that the (currently available) alternative solution to this (also referred from the Wiki entry), Stuck Pixel Sweeper (current version 1.0 RC1), which is written in Java, uses JDK1.2 (for example, java.awt.Toolkit.createCustomCursor) and, therefore, won't run under any version of JVM's JEODE and CrEme (tested with JEODE 1.9.3 and CrEme 4.00b8). Also, it can't be included in a HTML page to be run either because it isn't strictly an applet. If you, however, just decompile the class, Stucksweep.class, it'll be easy to make it compliant with 1.1 JVM's. Also, when I have some time, I'll code a small native PPC app that does the same to avoid the need for getting a video file + TCPMP. This method has been used successfully by many Pocket PC owners – see for example this thread.

Hi Menneisyys,

I have an HW6910 with about a dozen dead pixels in the bottom rows of the screen.

I downloaded and installed the latest version of TCPMP on my SD card, and copied there the video as well (which is in MP4 format).

Now, when I double click on the video file, I see that there's no application associated whith it, so I chose the Media Player.

After clicking "Done", I receive an error message from Media Player, saying that it cannot play the file. "The file is either corrupted, or the player does not support the format you are trying to play".

I tested the file on my PC, and it works well.

What am I missing?

Thank you.

Daniel, in TCPMP, go to Options / Settings... / Select Page / File Associations, check in MPEG4 Files (it's at the top). Then, press OK.

Hi Menneisyys,

Sorry for the late reply.

I succeeded in running TCPMP, but the suggested solution does not work, since the stuck pixels (they are stuck on red) are at the last line in the screen, below the bottom bar, while the video runs above the bottom bar...

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Daniel, switch to full screen mode (just tap the active area of the screen during video playback).

Nope, the bottom bar is black and the video is not played there.
I have an HW6910.

OK, I found the "expand to fill screen option", and the video is now covering the whole screen.

How many times do you think I should let it run, before trying something else? (assuming this won't fix the stuck pixels, since at the moment nothing has changed).

Some minutes at least. Don't be afraid of running it for an extended length of time - it wont do any damage to your screen.

I know that.
I have run it 3 times, no change at all.
Well, it seems that 2 red pixels have changed their color to yellow.
But basically I don't see a decrease in the number of the stuck pixels.

Yup, it isn't guaranteed to fix them - it may do the trick though.

Try running it for some more time.

No change.

I'll contact local HP support, and see whether they'll be willing to replace the screen.

Only downside would be being without the PPC for quite a while.

Thank you for your help.

I bought O2 Flame twice and I got dead pixel twice :(
