How come my LCD/touchscreen cracks by itself?

Q: is it possible that touchscreens are cracked by themselves? It's the second time the touchscreen in my iPAQ 1940 cracks and I'm asked for 120 UK pounds for the fix! Is it possible my PDA is (mechanically) faulty? A: Unfortunately, it's indeed the PDA that has developed some kind of mechanical defect that causes the screens to crack. I've heard of several cases like this, particularly with Palm Tungsten|C's and fractured LCD screens if you press too hard some of the buttons (see this thread ). This is definitely not a typical error with the 1940 series (I haven't ever heard of similar cases, unlike with, say, the Dell Axim x5 - see this thread); therefore, I think it's some kind of bent housing or some other, mechanical defect that is causing the problem. Therefore, if I were you, I would not pay anything for a new screen (and particularly not at that price - you can get a brand new, up-to-date and much better PDA for not much more money) because it will likely to be again cracked.

Hi, my LCD cracked by placing it on carpet. Support stated it won't be warranteed, that the LCD cracked from behind. I escallated the issue and HTC won't budge, same song and dance. I litterally didn't do anything but put my phone on the floor, pick it up a moment later, tried to use it and found the LCD busted/all scrambled. This is the 2nd LCD from HTC that has cracked on me - each time they blame me instead of recalling the phone due to lack of stability, manufacturer defect, etc. I highly recommend that anyone considering an HTC phone seriously consider other vendors based on support and warrantee. The $800 phone has cost me over $1K...
HTC bites!

Sorry to hear your bad experience. While I'm not a big fan of HTC's (current) models myself, I should add that none of their devices' LCD have ever broken on me, including rebranded models.

That is, I wouldn't say HTC's phones are really sensitive to screens cracking by themselves.
