T-Mobile Shadow: Battery problem now a known issue!
Well, one of my recent acquisitions has been T-Mobile's Shadow by HTC. It's been out for a week and I picked one up the day it was released.

If you've been scouring the forums on the net about people's first reports of this device, one of the things that may draw your attention is a number of people mentioning mixed results when it comes to battery life. Sure the device has a larger screen, more memory, and a smaller battery than the Dash; however, when one has to charge it more than once a day, then that calls for some concern.
My first one, seems to have been okay for the first couple of days; but near the end of the week, I noticed that I needed to charge it twice a day from leaving the home with a full overnight charge at about 8am and then reaching low battery warning at 1pm having had very little voice usage, minimal data connectivity, beaming turned off, being in a full coverage area, etc. T-Mobile let me exchange mine to a new one over the weekend, and now only three days into it, I've come across a day when I needed to charge it 3 times!
Calling T-Mobile PDA support this morning, they now have it listed in their database (yet not posted publically) as a known issue; however, it doesn't qualify for exchange - you can request that they send you a new battery and you do mainain the option to return your phone for a full refund within the 14 day buyer's remorse period.
So, T-Mobile has sent to me (with the Express shipping charges waived) a new battery. One piece of advice given over the phone (which was something I hadn't heard since back in the MPx200 days) is that when I receive it, is to give the battery a full 24-hour charge before daily use. I know that this had worked back then for the 2nd set of batteries sent out for the MPx200s so I'm willing to give that a shot and hopefully this will solve this issue of an otherwise fun phone.

Hi Rey-
I got the shadow too- Battery life is a bit short- However I sit with it at my desk all day, plugged in via USB... And plug it in at night...Battery life is a bit short, but hopefully a new firmware update will help somehow, or a new type of battery... I too am on my second shadow..there are always a few quirks and glitches with the first batch of phones. My alarm clock would glitch and freeze up the phone- that was a problem with the dash too i think... and twice my screen just went black. So I exchanged for ad ifferent one, this screen went black once too , but not again... Great phone other than that. Extra memory helps alot. Only thing missing is GPS
"One piece of advice given over the phone (which was something I hadn't heard since back in the MPx200 days) is that when I receive it, is to give the battery a full 24-hour charge before daily use."
This isn't really necessary, as has also been pointed out in several of my related guides (and those of Battery University). The T-Mo folks are still telling the same outdated advice.
It actually saves ALOT of battery (more than you think) if you turn off the WI FI except for when you want to use it
Yup. The battery Life is way too short and not acceptable. I even turned off the frequency of downloading e-mails to manual but my battery is also draining pretty fast. It was 100% 6AM when I woke up this morning, took it to work, have not made and calls just a couple e-mail check and now it's 1PM and the battery level is at 5%. I think T-Mobile needs to address this. I also did battery conditioning the first time I got the phone...
Just talked to T-Mo Tech Support. They told me that they are looking into this issue but have not promised a resolution anytime soon. You do have the option of returning the phone just mentioned in this post. What's annoying is that I wasn't even running Wifi, blue tooth and simply running it on standby mode. Choices: Return the phone to T-Mo before the 14 day limit or keep the phone and wait for a solution (you may want to buy an extra battery, usb power cable, car adapter or battery pack while you wait). :(
I am 99 percent certain I want this, my question. I am told WIFI works without taking TMobile's internet plan but ar eyou charged text messaging for reading and sending email? Thank You
Just like everyone here, my Shadow has severe battery issues. I charged it throughout the night and unplugged it around 9am. With no internet or ActiveSync usage the phone completely died by 12:30pm - 3.5 hours! When I actually use the internet and ActiveSync the phone dies within 2 hours. WTF?!
I knew it. I returned mine last week because the battery life was slowly degrading to unacceptable levels. I have gotten so used to the battery life of the Dash and Wing I found the Shadow battery life a complete disappointment.
Werner, you would know this better than anyone else. Could an additional 64 megs of RAM and a brighter screen cause this sucker to eat up battery life at almost twice the rate of the Dash? A similar device with the only difference being the lower RAM and a slightly dimmer screen.
It doesn't make sense.
I am experiencing similar issues. T-Mobile asked me if I left applications running in the Task Manager, and in fact, I did leave several apps running. They said that this *will* kill the battery fast. Has anyone tried turning off automatic sync and shutting down all applications that are not in use, and seeing how the battery life is then? I have 10 days to decide if I keep this, or return it for a Blackberry Pearl (which seems, from reports, to have very good battery life).
They are grasping for excuses. When I returned my Shadow they went through the usual drill - did you leave apps running, did you leave your wifi and/or bluetooth running, etc.
Have apps run in the background could impact battery life depending on the app but I have apps open all the time on my Dash and Wing and battery life wasn't affected in those instances.
I did try killing that auto sync and even the MyFav5 processes that was running in the background even though I am not subscriber to MyFav5. Didn't do squat.
This more than just a rogue program. It looks like they don't have a clue what is going on. Rogue programs, charge your battery for 24 hours...What is next? Go into flight mode to conserve battery life? Turn your phone off when charging your battery?
I am conducting an "experiment" where I charged my phone to 100% and disconnected it, and have done basically nothing (other than read about 3 text messages) all day. Between 12pm and 5pm, it went from 100% to 91% battery. That's not horrific, considering that it is most definitely not linear. But why should we need to disable all of the cool features?
Another thing that irks me now is that if you connect to an Exchange server, the phone registry configures to autolock after no more than 15 minutes. Given that you need to slide the screen open to access the keypad to enter your password, this is quite a hit on "usability" of a phone that is trying to sell itself on a clean UI.
Now for me, that is horrific - when compared to my Dash. My Dash would drop half of that - 4 or 5% tops. And that is what I have seen with my Dash. Battery life that is basically double of the Shadow. The Shadow really should be close to 100% of the Dash.
Yeah, that screen lock issue is tricky. They added more options to it so in the process they made it a little more user unfriendly for some reason. You have to tweak it too much in my opinion. And even then I noticed it sometimes ignores my locking options and or lock when I don't expect it.
I just got my shyadow yesterday even after hearing about the battery problems, I turned mine on at 8:00 am, read about 4 emails, called 3 people, 15 mins each, and did not have wifi on, it's noon now and my battery needs recharging, i love this phone, but can't keep charging it,,,, whats comprabile to this one? I like the camera, the iphone music, emails, it's a great phone, I am bummed, I'm sending it back after Thanksgiving.....
Results of my "research":
Used the phone for 1 day with all autosync disabled. Manually checked email 4 or 5 times. Browsed web for about 30 minutes total. Made about 45 minutes of phone calls. Here's what the battery life did:
12pm = 100%
2pm = 95% (1 or 2 text msgs)
5pm = 91% (1 or 2 text msgs)
11pm = 65% (some web/email/calls)
9am = 40% (did nothing during night)
10am = 29% (after 15 minute call)
I did not leave any applications running in the background. So, even with MINIMAL use, and almost all functionality disabled, this phone goes through about 3/4 of it's battery life in a day.
Still not sure about whether to exchange it because I don't know what to exchange for... probably a Blackberry, because the Dash is larger and also didn't have such a great reputation for battery life.
I had a problem with the screen. The screen will go off and would not turn on again..?? Also, it freezed a ouple time?? is this a shadow issue? They are sending me a ew one, but I am not sure if i should keep it or not.. do everyone has the same screen and freeze issues???
Good info Bob. That drop overnight is not good. But I have to say I experienced the same thing but it just took a few minutes longer to register it.
I went to sleep at midnight with 95% battery life and when I woke up 8 hours later it was at 92%. Okay, 3% drop isn't bad for eight hours standby. Well, in period of 15 minutes and using my phone in 3-4 one minute blocks it dropped to 80%. And I was just playing around with the OS. No calls, no internet, just the screen on and flipping through settings,etc. I think the battery meter is part of the problem.
And a 10% drop for a 15 minute call? That is bad.
My shadow seems to gobble up power like a starving student facing a thanksgiving feast. However, I expected to see that since it's a fully featured phone with a small form factor. I'm hoping that through a combination of fine-tuning settings like frequency of email checking and "auto-off when inactive" on wifi, etc will help. I'm also hoping someone makes an after market larger battery and case cover - another couple hundred milliamp hours would help a bunch.
But Pat, the only feature the Shadow has over the Dash is 64 more megs of ram. That shouldn't equate to battery life almost 50% battery less. They both have the same CPU and battery size is something like 960 vs 920mah. A small difference.
I fine tuned this to almost brick status and the battery life did not improve.
I decided to return mine. I will keep an eye out for T-Mo to fix this problem though because I thought the Shadow was perfect in every other way. Just couldn't accept the terrible battery life. How good is a phone if you need to charge it more than once a day?
I have a Shadow on the way will post my expericnces with it, here from day one.
My Dash and MDA have pretty good battery power. I'm on them all the time with all kinds of stuff running all the time.
Starting to have a lot of problems with Voice Command on the Dash. Any any rate will post my Shadow experiences from first charge thur first week.
I am on my second shadow now, I had mine for all of 2 days when the screen started to freak out when I would slide the phone open, I got mostly black screens with little lines down the right side, static with just the menu bar at the bottom and other weirdness. The thig is that it would still run the program behind the blank screen. It went into static mode mid picture taking once, and still took a few pictures even with the screen all static. It was to me obviously a hardware glitch in the slider.
After talking to at least 8 diffrent reps, each of which told me something diffrent, i got them to send me a new one, and after a week, i'm getting the same as the people above mentioned. The black screen of death. It won't even turn off. The batery must be removed to reboot it. As for batter life, it is sadly less than adqueate for me as well, and when I tried to pair it with a motorola headset to listen to music, it contiued to play the music through the phone speaker. I did see an option to add stereo in the blwetooth options that I had missed though, so that might fix that problem.
I have had conncetivity problems with it as well, it will kill the battery if you leave it to search. Randomly it works great some places, barely in others, and not at all as well sometimes. I'm even having problems with the wireless at work which is MICROSOFT for god sakes!
My shadow is going back asap, to many problems
DAY 1 WITH MY SHADOW
Received my Shadow last night Nov. 20, 2007, about 6:30PM. It came fully charged? I plan to battery let drain before I give it a full 24 hour charge.
It's functions seem pretty easy and straight forward. I made two calls, the first call was ok, but on the second call the screen locked/device locked. Had to remove the battery. Sync-ed it with Outlook it install my phone numbers and schedule. Will carry it with me today and use it until the battery drains.
OK so i got the Shadow Monday Morning but i did not really had time to play with it. but when i started playing with it the battery was just started going down. But i messed with it a lil for i to lock by its self and conserve energy and i did not do much. I just think that the battery is just to small for the phone to work good for a long period of time. And in my case I dont really use it much only for Camera, MP3, TEXtin, multymedia messaging and Calling! And i just bought it for the look that it haves. Im still a teen but the Battery is a problem!!! If u play around with it alot. And the only weird thing that i have had is that their is this application Always popping up Saying "if i want to sing up to Windows Live" and a few Frezzes but its because i have various applications Running. I have feww quick question. Is the phone right for me? Does the phone have any other problems that i should know before my 14 days are due??
DAY 2 WITH MY SHADOW
Nothing exciting the full charge that my phone came with started to drain about noon and died about 3:30 so it was powered for about 21 hours. I made not calls but aqbout received 14 calls.
Last night I noticed that receiver didn't sounds as good as the speaker. However, today the speaker and the receiver both were very clear and audible.
The Voice Command which comes with this device works better than the VC on my Dash, but both don't work as well as the Voice Command I purchased for my MDA.
I'm letting it charge for the newly recommended 24 hours. Let's see...WHAT IT DO!
I'll try the camera and the mp3 player then.
I got the Shadow last night at around 12:30am and left it charging all night until around 1pm. I made maybe two calls and a few texts and on the way home around midnight the screen blacked out. I have removed the battery and held the power button for as much as 15 seconds and nothing. This is pissing me off. For a $300 phone this shit should not be happening. It is a newly released phone and should have some glitches, however blacking out and being non-functional is not an acceptable glitch. So does everyone recommend trying another Shadow or getting a diffferent phone? If a different phone what do you think?? The Side Kick... I hate crackberry's
DAY 3 WITH MY SHADOW
I allowed the Shadow to charge for 29 hours(the first charge), it was Thanksgiving and I got stuck at my folks house.
At any rate after this initial charge the phone's battery was powered for 15 hours. I made and received several calls, total talk time for those calls was about 90 minutes. I took about 1 dozen pictures, sent 2 emails, 1 MMS message and Media Player played about five 3.5 to 4 minutes songs. Not really alot of activity, it began to drain a bit rapidly after about 47%. My Dash was still working off a charge from the day before. The Shadow dropped pass the Dash and powered off hours before the Dash did. The second partial charge was powered up longer. ?, However, I had very little activity going on. The screen froze 2 times. But if I call it or have someone else call it, it starts to function normally. It blacked out once I can't remmember what function I was trying do, but I also had it charging at that time with my MDA/Dash charger. That time it died all the way had to take the battery out and reinstall.
Since you can not manipulate the home screen, I install Facade 1.4 which allows me to add any programs that are on the device onto the home screen. And it also allows me to remove any program from the home screen.
All said and done I like this little phone for the most part. The picture quality was far better than my MDA which take crappy pictures, but overall a great phone/pc. The Shadow pictures are on par or slightly nicer than my Dash still checking that out need to take more pics.
The Mp3 quality pretty good no problems, sound quality good, volume good. What I really like is the sleekness of this phone over my two larger phone. However, I have been spoiled by their full keyboards. The Shadow will never be a texting or editing device for me.
DAY 4 WITH MY SHADOW
Nothing eventful today, a fews calls in so battery/phone spent the day on standby.
However, I did take more pictures. The picturers are sharp but the color is washed out, I was hoping that the 2.0 mega pixels would give me a better quality picture than my 1.3 mega pixel Dash. The Dash wins hands down. I have a 2.1 mega pixel Cyber Shot by Sony that I really like, and I just thought that the Shadows camera would approach that. NOT!!!!!! :-(
I used to have a dash for a little over a year, but dropped it one time too many. So I upgraded to the Shadow a little over a week ago without having checked up on user forums before buying it.
Having the same probs as everybody else. Started doing some experimenting of my own. So yesterday I charged the battery to 100%, the LED turned from yellow to green and I unplugged it about 9pm. I didn't use the phone, or any other features - AT ALL. At midnight I picked up the phone and battery life was 93%. I checked task manager and nothing was running, so I went to comm manager and turned off EVERYTHING...and went to bed. When I picked up the phone at 10am this morning it was giving me the low battery warning!!! This just doesn't make any sense at all. Spec's on the phone say up to 160 hours standby??? Try 13 hours!!! It's ridiculous. I haven't decided yet whether to trade it in and get a wing or use it to prop up the short leg on my dining room table....
The slightly larger screen and 64 megs extra of memory could perhaps nix 10% more power and the battery is about 4% smaller, so we could round and assume the Shadow would last 85% of the Dash. Still, putting a smaller battery in a device with more memory and a larger dsiplay kind of seems counter-intuitive.
The Wing would be my choice over the Dash if it had a faster CPU and more memory.
I returned the Motorola W490 I bought from t-mobile 2 weeks ago under the 14-day return option and got the Shadow to replace it. Like m ost of you, I have also noticed the battery drains very rapidly, as it was 100% at 7am this morning,I haven't used it at all yet today, and it's already down to 83% at 11:30am! A few other problems I'm encountering are that the message center does not always open for me to look at text messages, and I have to power down the phone & turn it back on to get it to open. Also the screen & keypad lighting shuts off so quickly, isn't there a way to extend the time the backlight so it stays on longer? This is an inconvenience when using the phone in low lighting, for texing or dialing from the keypad. Another thing that aggravates me is the wallpaper. I have sent myself a few pictures (jpg files) I would like to use as the home screen wallpaper. When I set to apply the pics as the wallppr, they get blown up instead of shrinking to fit the size of the screen. From my experience with previous phones, the pics always automatically shrink to fit the screen when set as wallpaper.
And last but not least... on the settings menu for the Slide & Keylock, when I try to change the setting I get an error message saying ERROR "the settings could not be opened". If anyone else is having any of these problems or could assist me in correcting them I would appreciate it.
now that i figured out how to watch youtube videos, i will wait for them to do something about the battery. I will be keeping the shadow for youtube USE!
I am having problems with my "My Faves", whenever I turn the phone off, and then back on the My Faves don't show back up on the phone or under the start menu. I have had 3 Shadows to try to fix this issue, and the same thing happenes on all three phones. No one at T-Mobile can figure out why this is happening. They have the their Engineers working on it, so they say, and are supposed to be contacting "HTC" the makers of the phone. I got all three phones in a two week period & still the issue is not resolved, they said they would call me back when they find the fix, I don't see that happening. Has anyone had this problem? I really like this phone and don't want to have to get a different one.
I dont know where to go for help for my problem. I just bought 2 Shadow's yesterday and I noticed that one of them is bright and has the details explained by others, but the other one I have is no where near as bright and has a grayish tint to the colors. As a different explanation, it looks like it has its brightness and contrast levels turned down. Has anyone experienced a problem like this or can help me with some direction or answers?
I've been trying to debate wether or not to get this phone. I'm currently running on my Sidekick ID, which is great, but didn't like the Sidekick LX. Before the ID I used the Sidekick 3, Tmobila MDA, and The Wing and I was pretty happy with those. The Shadow seems to have a butt loads of battery issues, and seeing as I'm a SMS freak, I probably won't pick it up until someone fixes the battery life. =[.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I have been having the same problem with my chasdow I have ad it for 5 days and i'm on my third one. The battery life is so short I'm charging at least once a day, but I figured I could live with that then my MYFaves disappear everytime I turn my phone off. I've been calling tech support from the second day of having it and still solution. I thought I was the only obe with that problem but I guess not. I was told they would update me when they come to a solution, but I'm pretty sure they have no idea whats going on with the phone. I love this phone so much butu I think I'm going to have to give it up.
I bought my shadow in favor of my blackberry pearl. Although battery life is shorter than most phones I have had, it does take about a week or so for the battery to condition itself. The first week I had it the battery life was terrible. I have had it now for a month and am happy to report it now stays on for at least 24 hours. I did let the battery discharge fully at least four times prior to getting better battery performance. I have corporate email direct push on at all times as well as active sync. This is a far superior phone to the blackberry pearl especially with mobile office and PDF viewer. Really awesome phone. I hope someone comes up with a fix for the battery. It almost seems that there is a firmware issue not so much the battery itself. Hopefully TMobile & HTC can fix it soon. Cheers!
i returned the second shadow, ear volume was too low, worked very well with ear peice or speaker function activated. i tried putting it up/down during conversations it was horrible. defeats the purpose of having a phone if u cant hear. didnt have it long enough to see the battery issue. keep away from this phone, it sux!
Regarding ear volume too low, the Shadow has a screen protector out of the box to protect it in transit, but this also covers the ear speaker above the screen. Took me a minute to notice, I was hoping to leave the protector on but I couldn't hear anybody. Maybe that's why the volume was so low?
So I made the move from blackberry to shadow and I have a few concerns -non battery related. First, can you highlight text and then copy and paste it? Also, is there a way to make it automatically capitalize the first letter in a new sentence? Does anyone know the answers to this? What is the point of having MS Office if you can't copy and paste?

I have a serious screen problem with my new Shadow that prevents me from commenting on the battery issue. Within 24 hours the screen appears damaged with a black mark in the LCD and lines radiating from it. The phone was definitely not dropped or mishandled in any way.
Have talked to the T mobile store manager and 3 different "supervisors"

I've had my Shadow for a few months now, and yes I've had the same issues mentioned earlier by the others. I had the phone dialing all by itself, and on many occasions it shut down, and yes the battery would'nt last half a day. I called T-mobile and they sent me a replacement phone. That has been a month ago, So far this one has been excellent. The battery actually lasts more than a day...!!! I'll post again if any glitches appear..
I recently got a Shadow. I am comming from a Nokia 6610. Using the phone like a basic one (all smart capabilities turned off or not used) I got about 2 days between charges. I caled TMobile and complained. The sent me a free battery. With this one I can got 3 days with only using it sporadit for phone calls and very sporadic for Internet access over EDGE. I noticed that WiFi drains the battery realy quick so I turned it Off. I always stop all apllications at the end of the "session" (before locking the phone). Hope this helps.
I have had my shadow for about a week now. I waited hopeing they would work out all the gliches. The second day I had it. I charged it before i went to bed because I use as my alarm. fully charged at 12am with no apps on no wi fi on and no blue tooth on. It was a 5% when I got up at 6 am 6 hours. I am going to call t mobile about this. but, it does not sound like they have done anything about yet. I also am having my alarm go off at 7:30am everyday even with it off. Is that a known issue? i really do love the phone, and would hate to give it up because of the battery
im glad im not alone!!!
i love the phone
hopefully a fix comes soon
I have had my shadow for 3 weeks. I love the phone. I get 1 days use per battery charge which is not good but works.
The alarm clock issue mentioned above is a serious problem. I have set and changed the alarm time 3 different times and even though the alarm is turned off the alarm goes off for all 3 times. Anyone know of a solution?
i dont know what all of you are complaining about for battery life, mine lasts a good 3-4 days on a single charge depending on what i do
Just recieved shadow for christmas, has been a good phone up until now, yes the battery life is short, but that is not my issue. This morning after charging my phone i turned it on......the screen was totally white and stayed that way, i pulled out the battery and put it back in and reset the phone...now i have a completely black screen.......not very useful... can make or recieve calls but very hard with no screen, anyone else having this issue? the tmobile suppport rep claimed that this is uncommon and they have not had problems with this....hopefully they will send me a new phone
