Upgrade HP IPAQ 214 to Windows Mobile 6.1

Hello everyone,

I have a HP IPAQ 214 with Windows Mobile 6.0 preinstalled. HP does not support upgrads. is there a way for me to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1?

Any help is very much appriciated, thanks!

Hello BolligeA1,

Unfortunately, there is no other way to upgrade your device, unless HP offers the ROM update. They have not announced any plans to do so.

Hello Linley,

Thanks for your answer, aren't there third pardys who offer versions that will work?

No. Upgrades are offered/sold by device manufacturers and mobile operators only. However, if you come across a third source on the web and decide to apply it to your device, be extremely careful and think twice before you do it. It might damage your PDA and render it inoperable.

Thanks a lot for your efforts!!

If you do find a cooked ROM for your device, iinstalling it will void any remaining HP warranty on your 214. So you should avoid temptation at least until you are beyond the coverage period. Then, if you are willing to take your chances, the xda-developers site is a place to watch for cooked ROMs, but they are always offered as-is with no recourse (official or otherwise) should your device get bricked by a ROM update. As Linley pointed out, only manufacturer-releaased updates are guaranteed compatible and given any sort of support.

If you really want the upgrade, consider purchasing a new device like the HTC Touch Diamond or the Touch Pro.

Yup, those are pretty nice device BUT

1. they have a Qualcomm CPU, which, in cases, may fare worse than the PXA-310 in the iPAQ

2. the iPAQ hgas a 4" screen, while these new VGA devices both have a 2.8" one. With a 4" screen, you can surely take advantage of VGA; with 2.8", far less so.

3. the iPAQ also has a USB host and SD/CF slots.

As another 210 owner, HP has stated that they will NOT offer a 6.1 ROM upgrade. That appears to signal the death of the iPAQ 210 IMHO. Something many will find offensive, I acknowledge. If you look at what HP has done for the iPAQ 210 they released a battery driver update that was so well tested, that it had a spelling error in the registry. After I publish this fact HP quietly pulled the original battery update and replaced it with a corrected update, with out acknowledging this fact. It leaves those who installed the original battery update with a error in their registry.

The iPAQ 210 has a problem with power drain when the device is turn off, and this can be made worst with a CF memory card inserted into the device when it is off.

The iPAQ 210 does not correctly report Wi-Fi channels.

The iPAQ 210 has software install that is nonfunctional.

There are very real issues with the iPAQ 210. Rumor has it that the iPAQ 210 is about to be replaced by an iPAQ 240, that HP has given up on the iPAQ 210. Certainly it appears that HP has released a number of meaningless updates that do nothing for the average user in the last few months. Updates that have been flawed, updates that appear to not be worth minimal effort to test, before releasing.

When powered by the miniUSB connection the iPAQ 210 is current limited to less current than the iPAQ can draw. Under certain conditions you can draw more power than the miniUSB port will permit to pass to the iPAQ 210. This at a minimal may result in the iPAQ draining its battery when connected to power. This may also have other significant down sides for the battery.

On the upside HP has recently published a how to upgrade the ROM for the iPAQ210, this **may** signal that a ROM upgrade is in the works, or as it is very generic it may be ultimately meaningless.

Just an FYI - I've had the 210 since it came out and I have never had a problem with battery drain when off.  From what I've seen this is related to CF cards - those w/o CF cards weren't seeing this problem.
