News: Mobile Game Engine Boasts 3D Enhancements

In an article on windowsfordevices.com, the news of Element Interactive's new major update to their mobile game engine was discussed. The article said in part:

"Netherlands-based Elements Interactive (EI) has released a major update to its multi-platform mobile game engine. Edgelib version 3.00 adds "advanced 3D operations," including support for OpenGL ES and 3D animations, according to the company.

EI describes Edgelib as "the most powerful, true multi-platform game engine for mobile devices." The library was written "from scratch" in C++, to support the development of high-quality applications and high-performance games. It implements a device independent API (application programming interface) and features "true multi-platform development, high-performance 2D graphics, hardware accelerated 3D graphics through OpenGL ES, RGBA surfaces, and both Bluetooth and TCP/IP networking," the company adds."

This is good news for mobile game enthusiasts, as the new game engine will equip future games with higher quality graphics.

Tip#358: Use An Ergonomic Stylus

By Dan Hanttula

It’s no secret that we lose a lot of ergonomic benefits by using a handheld device. The tiny device designs and smaller keyboards don’t promote good ergonomic techniques. However, there is one way that you can promote better use: with a third-party stylus. Best of all, you can carry a better stylus around with you without any extra effort!

A third-party stylus promotes better ergonomics by eliminating the need to try to write with a tight, pinched grip. As an added bonus, you can even buy a “multi-purpose” stylus that includes a pen, pencil, and highlighter tip, in addition to functioning as a stylus. (I’ll provide a list of third-party stylus vendors at the end of this article.)

Once you purchase a larger stylus, you’ll need a way to carry it. Unfortunately, each PDA has a silo that is specifically designed to only accept the stylus that ships with the device. However, most handhelds also come with a carrying case, and you can easily use that to make sure that your new stylus goes everywhere that your Windows Mobile device does.

If you have a case with a strap on top, odds are good that the strap is loose enough to fit the stylus inside the strap (see below). Carrying the stylus in this manner allows you to easily keep the stylus and PDA in one neat little package. If the strap is too loose (allowing the stylus to slip out), you can use the clip on the stylus to secure it to the strap on the carrying case.

If the strap on your carrying case is too snug to fit a stylus inside it, you can use the clip on the stylus to secure it to the outside of the case. Obviously, this method exposes the stylus to impacts that could jar it loose, so this might not be a good solution for people who lead an active lifestyle or are clumsy (like me).

Of course, the carrying case that you already have may provide additional ways to store a larger stylus, like an extra space at the bottom of the case, or even a loop for carrying a pen. Take a look at the case you have now and use a little imagination. After all, the benefits of using a larger stylus might outweigh the inconvenience of lugging it around.

·  PDA Panache

·   Stylus Plus

·    Stylus Central

Article: Slingbox—Watch Your Home TV Anywhere

In an article in the Apr/May 2007 issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, author discusses a device you can use to access your TV over the Internet. He said in part:

"I've never been as enthusiastic and totally blown away by a product I've reviewed than I am over Slingbox.

Slingbox is a little black and red box that connects to your home TV video receiver box (cable, satellite, or DVR), and in conjunction with your Internet router, broadcasts your digital or analog TV signal over the Internet. You must have a broadband Internet connection at home and be able to connect to one when you're traveling in order to run Slingbox. You can then watch any channel available on your home system from anywhere in the world (or elsewhere in your home) using an Internet-connected PC or Windows Mobile device. Best of all, you can also watch programs recorded on your DVR and even control your TV and DVR remotely."

Jim Karpen's Hot Web Site of the Week: Mobile Music

We’ve talked a lot about mobile video but haven’t given much coverage to the trend toward mobile music. One of the leaders in this arena is Mercora, which lets you stream music to your device from its vast library of over 3.5 million songs and from its 100,000 channels of digital radio.

If this is something you’re interested in, Mercora, in conjunction with Microsoft, is currently offering a free six-month trial. The service normally costs $15 per three-month period or $50 per year. They’ve also recently released a new version of their software, which now includes the ability to make play lists and to listen to pod casts.

More info can be found on Microsoft’s site as well as links to download the software.

Of course, you’ll need an Internet connection for this, which entails having a device with Wi-Fi or a Windows Mobile phone with a data plan.
