Sponsored Item: Motorola

Being a mobile professional is tough.

Good thing we’re tougher.

Let’s face it. No mobile professional wants to deal with numerous communication devices — each one more fragile than the next. That’s why Motorola designed the durable, all-in-one MC35 Enterprise Digital Assistant. Now you can combine the voice and data capabilities your business needs with the backend connectivity you want — all in a small, lightweight form factor that allows your people to make calls, send and receive email, connect to the Web, read bar codes and even get directions via GPS. Best of all, the MC35 is durable enough to handle all-day, everyday use in a variety of settings. It’s just another way Motorola puts Seamless Mobility in the palm of your hand. HELLOMOTO™.

News: Fragmentation Expected To Slow Mobile Video Growth

In an article posted on windowsfordevices.com, a report about the future of combining cell phones, pay-TV, and other media is discussed. The article said in part:

"Mobile Video Services combining cell phones, broadcasting, pay-TV, satellites, and the Internet are a "hot topic with great potential," but the market is "very complicated, and will take quite a few more years to completely sort itself out," according to a new report from In-Stat."

Despite huge advances in mobile technology over the past few years, it appears that full convergence of TV with cell phones is still some distance away.

Review: The Best of CTIA

In an article in the Aug/Sept 2007 issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, author Alan Zaks discusses video ringtones, travel tools, and Bluetooth accessories. He says in part:

"The CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association) wireless conference is held twice a year in different locations. CTIA exhibitors display the latest and greatest technologies related to wireless communication, some of which are still in the concept stage and others that are not yet released. By the time you read this, most of the items mentioned will be available"-"the few that aren't should be quite soon."

Tip#370: Turning The Sound Off At Set Times

There may be times when you want to schedule the sound on your device to be off (such as during regular lectures or meetings) so that you don’t have to manually turn the sound off and back on again. This can be done using Spb Phone Suite for Pocket PC Phone Editions (spbsoftwarehouse.com), which also includes a variety of other phone features that are not included in the operating system.

AlarmToday (pocketmax.net) is another third-party Pocket PC program that allows control over all sound notifications.

Article: Creating and Using Themes

In an article in the Aug/Sept 2007 issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, authors discuss ways you can change the look of your Windows Mobile device with new themes. They say in part:

"A Windows Mobile "theme" is a file containing graphical information, icons, and other elements used to customize the look and feel of the Today or Home screens. Thousands of themes are available online, most of them for free. In addition, you can create your own themes using any of a number of excellent programs. Themes are more than clever coordination of contrast and color. They not only catch the eye and make the drab into something more appealing, they also enhance the user experience, adding a spark of newness to your device."

Jim Karpen's Hot Web Site of the Week: Mercora From Microsoft

A couple weeks ago I wrote about Microsoft’s new Windows Mobile Owners Circle. I should note a nice freebie available there; a free six-month subscription to Mercora, a music service for mobile devices that makes available over 3.5 millions songs via ad-free, high-fidelity streaming audio.

Mercora normally costs $50 per year or $15 for three months and is compatible with Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 2003 SE devices. It requires an EDGE, EV-DO, UMTS or HSDPA cellular-wireless data connection. (And of course it's a good idea to have an unlimited data plan with your mobile operator.)
