News: HP Unveils New Smartphones, PDAs, GPS

In an article on windowsfordevices.com, the introduction of HP's new line of Windows Mobile devices was discussed. The article said in part:

"At a Sept. 5 gala event, HP debuted 56 different iPAQ-branded products, including five mobile software programs, twelve mobile services, almost three dozen handheld accessories, and five new handheld devices. Underlining the company's longtime Microsoft relationship, the new handhelds all run Windows Mobile or Windows CE."

The introduction of these devices breathes new life into the standard Pocket PC market, which has remained stagnant in the Smartphone-dominated Windows Mobile scene.

Tip: Protect Yourself From Text Spammers

To avoid receiving text message spam, call 888-382-1222 to register with the National Do Not Call List, which will block your number for five years. You must call from the number you wish to block. Or, you can register at donotcall.gov. You can also report telemarketers online at this address.

However, foreign spammers can blast away without consequence using auto dialer software, and not much can be done about it by the FCC. But when you consider the source of the phone numbers being your phone carriers, they are the ones who should be held culpable with severe consequences.

My advice is to call your phone carrier and complain bitterly. Call your elected representatives and complain. Make your voice heard and maybe we can put a stop text message spam before it starts spreading like e-mail spam.

Review: Trends in the Utility Industry

"Typically, utility companies are large organizations with a huge, well-established infrastructure. Because of this, they tend to be slow in changing the way they do things. Yet today, after decades of steadfastly relying on pen and paper, utilities from coast to coast are rapidly adopting handheld technology to collect, store and relay data. Why now? Just ask your neighborhood meter reader.

In the bad old days, meter readers would have to go door to door, in the rain, wind, and snow, collecting information on paper pads and trying to protect them from the elements. Today, these foot soldiers of the utility industry can capture data on ruggedized handhelds by either punching in a few numbers on a keypad or connecting the handheld directly to the meter via cable or wirelessly. The same systems can send the data back to the office securely and almost instantly."

Article: Thinking Outside the Mobility Box

"Over the past decade, most enterprises that rely on mobile workforces for field service and mobile enterprise asset management (EAM) have attempted to deploy mobile data handheld solutions. Some companies have achieved great success already, while others are still in preliminary pilot phases. Simply put, customer service field organizations react to trouble tickets generated from a call center, while maintenance and break/fix activities performed on internal asset investments are scheduled or acted upon in time-sensitive situations. To date, the industry standard for customer-facing application deployments is to enable real-time access to mobile data over Wide Area Networks (WAN), while internal-facing asset maintenance applications are typically fat-client solutions that are synched up at the end of a shift."

Jim Karpen's Hot Web Site of the Week: Mobile Directories and Portals

We get a huge amount of traffic to our mobile directory ppcmag.com/mobile/mobile.asp, but it was ugly and not that easy to navigate. So recently I restructured it so that the main categories are listed as links at the top, allowing you to quickly jump to the section you want. And we spiffed up the appearance too.

My purpose in creating this was to assemble the best mobile directories and portals. I list comprehensive directories, which offer categorized access to hundreds of mobile sites. I also have a list of start pages — which are smaller lists of the mobile versions of the most prominent web sites on the Internet.

In addition, I list what I call “Web Portals” — proxy services that let you enter the URL of any web site and then will automatically convert it to a mobile site “on the fly.” And I give some of the major mobile search engines, which typically also use proxy services to reformat the web pages you view when you click on any search result.

Other items in our mobile directory include links to mobile sites that offer streaming media and sites that offer freeware, as well as a selection of mobile sites that are related to Windows Mobile devices.

We also spiffed up our mobile home page (ppcmag.com/mobile), which offers a mobile version of some of our weekly offerings (such as this column) as well as links to other resources such as our magazine archives and our blogs.
