News: Windows Mobile Now Supports Office 2007

In an article on pdastreet.com, author James Alan Miller discusses the announcement that Windows Mobile 6 now supports Office 2007 documents. The article said in part:

"Break out the Champaign and caviar. Close to a year after the introduction of both Windows Mobile 6 and Office 2007, Microsoft has finally gotten around to enabling you to manage documents created using the latter's new Open XML (Extensible Markup Language) file formats on devices that run on the former."

This is great news for Windows Mobile and Office 2007 users!

Tip: Navigate Through Menus With The D-pad

With the D-pad, it is possible to navigate through any of the built-in menus in Windows Mobile devices (without the need for a stylus on touch screen devices).

For example, in the Settings menu on touch screen devices, you can use the D-pad to scroll through and highlight options, and to access the tabs at the bottom by pressing the down key when the last option at the bottom is highlighted. This will highlight the current tab that is open; press left or right to go the desired tab.

On non-touch screen Smartphones, there is often the option of selecting “More” on the bottom task bar when you are in the Start or Settings menus. You can simply press left or right on the D-pad to see the desired screen instead of pressing the “More” soft key repeatedly.

Article: Mobile Security Strategies

Predicting security trends is a lot like predicting the weather. We will never be able to tell exactly what the temperature will be tomorrow, but we can have a pretty good idea of whether or not it will rain. The information security community has experienced continually changing security problems for a number of years and now has a very robust understanding of the security laws of physics: how and why attacks occur. Although specific situations are unique, the laws of physics never change. Today, lost and stolen devices are arguably the most prevalent mobile security threats. Looking forward, multiple trends are causing mobile devices to become both an easy and valuable target for criminals to attack. The good news is that we recognize the problems and can take steps today and in the future to prevent the scale of attacks that have plagued traditional networked computers.

Jim Karpen's Hot Web Site of the Week: ChannelChooser

ChannelChooser is an amazing site with several thousand streaming channels — sports, news, entertainment, movies, documentaries, major networks — and a subset of those on the mobile site. It doesn’t work so well on my EV-DO broadband, but likely would via Wi-Fi, which my particular device doesn’t have.
