News: Editors' retrospective -- Windows-powered Devices in 2007

In an article on windowsfordevices.com, the editors discuss the major developments in the Windows Mobile and Windows Embedded world in 2007. The article said in part:

"2007 was a banner year in the continuing proliferation of "Windows Embedded" software within "smart" devices. Numerous new Windows-powered devices reached market, including smartphones, set-top boxes, portable media players, thin clients, GPS gadgets -- even cars from Fiat and Ford."

With all that went on in the Windows Mobile world in 2007, '08 looks to be a promising year for handheld devices.

Tip: Accessing the "Run" option

Windows Mobile touch screen devices have a “Run” option that lets you start a program by entering its executable file name. For example, if you wanted to use Run to start Internet Explorer Mobile, you would follow these steps:
  1. Press and hold down on the center key of your D-pad and then tap and hold on the time display in the upper right corner of the screen. Then release the D-pad button. A small pop-up menu appears displaying two options: Run and Clock.
  2. Select the Run option and the Run dialog box appears.
  3. Enter the name of Internet Explorer’s executable file (“iexplore.exe”) into the box labeled “Open.”
  4. Press the OK button and Internet Explorer should start up.
This does seem like a rather complicated way to start Internet Explorer. After all, you can launch it from the Start menu. The Run option is of more use to developers because it allows them to execute command line parameters (such as “ctlpnl.exe cplmain.cpl,4,0”). For more information on accessing control panel applets from the command line, see the article titled “Using Control Panel” on the Pocket PC Developer Network (pocketpcdn.com/articles/controlpanel.html).
