The
game I played most this week:
Boney Boy
Hop and Capture:
Alquerque
No,
it has nothing to do with Albuquerque, New Mexico (at least that I know
of). I’ve never heard of the game, but it’s apparently the ancestor of
the modern game of checkers. Just like checkers,
Alquerque
is pretty simple: just hop over your opponent’s pieces and capture as
many as you can. Whoever conquers all of the other side’s pieces wins
the game.
Checkers
is, well, a pretty simple game and there really isn’t much you can say
about it. Alquerque is also pretty simple and doesn’t differ much at all
from the game it eventually spawned.
So why bother with it? The ancient Egyptian atmosphere is nice and
gives the game a feeling of newness. Alquerque has pretty decent
graphics, and the game board and pieces are different enough from
checkers that it might appeal to some who enjoy this type of game. Best
of all, it’s free, which pretty much makes it a no-brainer for those who
like traditional board games.

Soldiers In Chess:
Petteia
The
developer of Alquerque has another game called
Petteia,
which dates back to Ancient Greece. This one apparently was a
big hit back in the Trojan War. This one is played between two
sides and is a bit like chess, except that the goal is to remove
enemy soldiers by sandwiching them between two of your own. This
is a big different between just hopping over enemies when you
find them, and while it isn’t nearly as sophisticated as an
average game of chess, it’s still an interesting variation on
the theme.
As in Alquerque, the graphics are pretty decent in this one and
the game has a nice overall atmosphere. This one’s a freebie,
too, and worth picking up if you like old board games or are
willing to try out a strategy games that’s a bit different from
what you’re used to.
