Guide to Reviews

"Platform" tells you what version of the Pocket PC operating system you'll need to run the game. If you see a +, it means the game also runs on newer devices.

PPC2000 Pocket PC 2000 devices (iPAQs, Casios, Jornadas, etc.). Since these devices use several different CPUs, check with the developer about your specific device.
PPC2002  Pocket PC 2002 devices (iPAQ 3800s, Toshiba 740s, etc.).
WM2003 Windows Mobile 2003 devices (iPAQ 2215s, 5500s, etc.).
WM5.0 Windows Mobile 5.0 devices (Dell X51, X51v, etc.)

The game I played most this week: Sizzler Supremacy

Swap Eggs: Sizzler Supremacy

It’s Easter as I write this, and Clickgamer once again is doing one of its holiday promotions that they’ve been doing pretty much since their early days. Free holiday games have been a staple of the Pocket PC gaming scene since the platform became popular, and it’s nice to see these freebies still popping up now and then even as things are slowing down.

I was thinking with the Chess-type layout of the game board that Sizzler Supremacy was going to be more strategic than most of the freebie action games I’ve played, but alas, it’s just Bejeweled. Since it’s a Clickgamer release, the game does let you swap game pieces vertically (this has been a basic feature of their free Bejeweled clones for as long as I can remember). SS also does have pretty good game play, and while I wouldn’t quite say that it’s “awesome super fluid,” it’s definitely better than average. The graphics are also much better than most clones. The game pieces are well conceived (although some of the eggs are a bit ugly and well, look a bit rotten).

SS supports just about every device out there, even square devices. In conjunction with Pocket Gamer.org, Clickgamer is having a contest until the end of April. The highest score in Timed Mode submitted by April 30th will win $100 worth of Clickgamer gift certificates. Not a bad deal, since $100 will get you a decent number of games these days and Clickgamer’s library has most of what’s available. If you’re bored this month, do check out the game.

News - Ardennes 1944

Those of you who enjoy war/strategy gaming have probably noticed that a new game called Ardennes 1944 has been released. Instead of the obligatory RTS (although no one seems to be making these for the Pocket PC anymore), Ardennes is one of those old-style turn-based, hexadecimal games that were popular in the 80s up to the mid-90s when RTS became all the rage. Although games in the category tend to have pretty crude graphics, Ardennes actually looks quite good. Stay tuned… I’ll check it out next week. In the meantime, you can view the game’s product page here.
