Map of Ages: Pocket Heroes

By: Ben Stanley

With the release of Orions, the Windows Mobile strategy game scene got a major boost. More specifically, the turn-based strategy game scene, which in my opinion has long been neglected on our platform, got a boost. And now, only a few months later, with the release of Pocket Heroes (based on the ever popular Heroes of Might and Magic games) the turn-based strategy genre has received another major boost. Read on for a detailed breakdown of this masterpiece...

Basic Gameplay

Pocket Heroes has many aspects of traditional turn-based strategy games. You start each map with one hero, who possesses his or her own stats and skills as well as a rudimentary army. Depending on what map you're playing,
you may also start with a castle as well. Castles serve several functions in the game. You can build improvements to your castles that allow you to recruit deadlier creatures for your army, raise gold, and create other vital game resources. They can also provide you with a defensive advantage when you're attacked. Finally, castles are where you can hire additional heroes.

Field Towers: Azgard Defence

By: Ben Stanley

I was surprised to see that MoreGames Entertainment had released another game so quickly on the heels of the release of their excellent game Orions: Legend of Wizards (see review here). However, the quick release schedule seems not to have adversely affected the quality of this game. If you're a fan of the Tower Defense sub-genre, then Azgard Defence will not disappoint!

Gameplay

As alluded to above, Azgard Defence belongs to that sub-genre of games usually known as "tower defense." In such games, waves of enemies run a preset path and attempt to reach their goal on the other side of the screen. The player's task is to strategically place different types of towers on the field. Each tower then fires projectiles at the enemies as they pass. Killing enemies and surviving waves of enemies gives you more money with which you can purchase more towers. If this still doesn't make sense, then try this flash game, which should give you a sense of what this type of game is all about.

Lost In A Cave: Droid - The Beginning

By: Eric Pankoke

In the beginning there was Robocop and Return Of The Jedi. Now we have Droid: The Beginning, with a hero that looks much like a cross between ED-209 and an AT-ST. Physical similarities aside, Droid is a somewhat amusing, if not ultimately repetitive and frustrating, platform adventure that could have been made much better with some objectives, a save game, and a better weapons recharge system.

Purple Horned Dragon: SmartGear

By: Werner Routsalainen

UPDATE (05/30/2007): PG.org frontpage; 0.25 bugfix version out with fixed VGA support (see THIS thread for more info; in there, I've also been discussing with the developer whether on-screen tap areas are important.)
(original article follows.)

Anyone having read my emulator reviews (particularly the NES (Famicom) and the TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine) ones) knows SmartGear is one of the best 8/16-bit gaming console emulator for both the Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 6 Classic / Professional) and Smartphone (Windows Mobile 6 Standard).
