News:  Microsoft Acquires New Reference Design

Microsoft has purchased a reference design for a wireless phone/PDA—the "MicroPDA"—from Intrinsyc Software. The MicroPDA design supports Windows CE .NET and Smartphone 2002 platforms and will support Pocket PC Phone Edition and Linux in the near future. Features include an integrated GPRS/GSM modem; support for Ethernet, serial, and Bluetooth connections; USB support; a four-inch color LCD screen; a built-in VGA resolution camera; and CompactFlash and SDIO support.

Tip #153:  Pocket PC Help

On your desktop PC, you are probably used to using the Help command when you can't figure out how to do something. Usually, Help has its own menu in the toolbar, and often it can be accessed from the F1 key as well.

Just like the context-sensitive F1 key on your desktop PC, which opens different help files depending on which application is active when you press it, the Start > Help command on your Pocket PC will bring up a Help file that is specific to whichever application is "in front" when you use it. Try it: Open Pocket Word, and then tap Start > Help. Voila!

Some Help files are more helpful than others, but it's a good place to start if you're stumped, and a good way to learn more about each application.

    Review:  Dell Axim X5

Dell Computer Corp. has thrown its inexpensive hat into the Pocket PC ring with the release of two versions of its new Axim X5. The quality and power of the new Dell Pocket PCs, coupled with extremely low introductory pricing ($300/$200), is guaranteed to please handheld consumers and worry other Pocket PC manufacturers.

The "high performance" version of the Axim X5 sports 64 MB RAM, 48 MB flash ROM, and a 400 MHz XScale processor. The less-expensive "value" version has 32 MB RAM, 32 MB flash ROM, and a still-respectable 300 MHz XScale processor. Other than those differences, and the fact that the less-expensive version comes with a data cable instead of a cradle, the two new Dell Pocket PCs are identical devices.

Jim Karpen's Hot Web Site of the Week:  aximsite.com

Chris Leckness, a web design hobbyist, has created a handsome website for owners of the new Dell Axim X5 Pocket PCs. According to Chris, his main concern is to keep the "Axim Owners Only" idea. There are no plans to branch out to other audiences, but he plans to use Aximplanet.com as the URL for a small-screen version of aximsite, allowing users of Axims and other PDAs to view the reviews and key forums.
